Reports from doctors in the second city, Benghazi, said at least 50 people had died there since yesterday lunchtime. Medics at other hospitals in the eastern city, the seat of the uprising, said they had seen hundreds of dead since the unrest began last Thursday.
Members of a Libyan army unit reportedly told Benghazi residents they had defected and 'liberated' the city last night from forces supporting Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi."
