Ivory Coast 800 killed in one city alone

El NACHO - 01:42

The organisation claimed that hundreds were killed in the western city of Duekoue on Tuesday.
"There is no doubt that something on a large scale took place in this city, on which the ICRC is continuing to gather information," said Dorothea Krimitsas, an ICRC spokesman, adding that Red Cross representatives had "themselves seen a very large number of bodies".
News of the alleged deaths came as Ivory Coast's strongman Laurent Gbagbo defied calls to surrender as forces loyal to the internationally-recognised President Alassane Ouattara laid siege to the palace where he is thought to be in hiding.
Mr Gbagbo's spokesman said the 65-year-old veteran ruler of Ivory Coast would never hand over the reigns of power and denounced the attempt to remove him by force as a "coup d'etat".
As heavy weapon fire rang out around the economic capital Abidjan and reports circulated of atrocities committed by both sides, the United Nations warned that those killing civilians would be punished under international law.
